Why we Need K2
Vitamin K2 is an essential vitamin that’s needed all over the body, at every stage of our lives. It’s responsible for activating calcium-binding proteins, helping calcium get to where it’s needed. Sometimes it’s for building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth, and other times, preventing harmful calcium deposits.
K2 in Food
Studies show that modern Western diets only provide us with a limited amount of vitamin K2.
For a long while, human diets provided plenty of vitamin K2. But that stopped being the case somewhere along the way, and many people started developing vitamin K2 deficiency.
Dietary recommendations for vitamin K range between 75 to 120 mcg per day, but these can be higher for specific populations. No matter who we are or what we do, vitamin K2 is involved in various processes in the body.
K1 and K2
We’ve seen a lot of confusion around the differences between vitamins K, K1 and K2. We’d like to help clear things up.
Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that exists naturally in multiple forms K1 (phylloquinone) or K2 (menaquinone).
Vitamin K1: is found in high amounts in leafy green vegetables. It has a short half-life and is mainly used by the liver to support blood clotting. Deficiencies are rare.
Vitamin K2: also known as menaquinone, is typically found in animal-derived and fermented products. Unlike K1, vitamin K2 is not mainly used by the liver, but also by our bones and vasculature.
It activates many vitamin-k-dependent proteins, such as osteocalcin or matrix Gla protein, which play roles in building and maintaining bone mass and supporting healthy circulation and blood vessels. Many of us consume low amounts of vitamin K2.
K2 Subtypes
Vitamin K2 has dozens of subtypes, called menaquinones (all named after the length of their molecular chain, now that you ask). The most well-known menaquinones are menaquinone-4 (MK-4), and menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Due to its exceptionally high bioavailability and long half-life, supplementation in the form of vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is recommended, as this means there’s enough vitamin K for the carboxylation of target proteins outside the liver.
Cis and trans
In nature, menaquinones are found in a linear configuration, called trans. This is what’s known as the bioactive form, the form our bodies can use in food supplements.
Because of inferior production methods or stability issues, it can take a non-linear, cis shape. Cis forms cannot fit in their target, and thus fail to activate vitamin K-dependent proteins. This makes them biologically inactive.
