Warning: This page contains spoilers for the October 27, 2022 game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.
Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category American Composers) for Thursday, October 27, 2022 (Season 39, Game 34):
He turned to opera with the 1903 work “Guest of Honor”, likely inspired by Booker T. Washington’s dinner at the White House
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sadie Goldberger, an interpreter from Columbia, Maryland Sadie’s semifinal: Monday, October 24, 2022 |
Jack Weller, a law student originally from San Diego, California Jack’s semifinal: Tuesday, October 25, 2022 |
Rowan Ward, a chart caller, writer & editor from Chicago, Illinois |
Rowan’s semifinal: Wednesday, October 26, 2022
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
We’re now down to three players: Sadie Goldberger, Jack Weller, and Rowan Ward. By the end of tomorrow’s game, one of them will find themselves in next Thursday’s Tournament of Champions quarterfinal against Courtney Shah and John Focht.
Per the box scores of the semifinals, Rowan had 49 buzzer attempts to Jack’s 42 and Sadie’s 38; if that holds in the finals, that will be a definite advantage to Rowan. One major advantage to Jack is that he has very much taken advantage of Daily Doubles—earning an average of $10,000 a game on those clues alone. Sadie has led both of her games going into Final Jeopardy, so she can’t be counted out either.
One thing I noticed as soon as I saw the J!6 categories today: there is a category called LEARNED LEAGUES in Double Jeopardy!; 11 of the 18 competitors in Second Chance over the past two weeks have been LearnedLeague members, and I’m sure that all eleven of them will very much appreciate the reference.
One important note for fans living in the Denver television market: On days where FOX is broadcasting the World Series—which could be as many as five times between tomorrow and the end of next week (Oct. 28, Oct. 31, Nov. 1, Nov. 2, Nov. 4)—the show will be aired on KWGN (CW, Channel 2) instead of the usual KDVR (FOX, Channel 31).
On a more personal note, it is the time of year for the twice-yearly Gamers vs. MS 168-hour online fundraiser! 24 different Twitch streamers will be live between 8 AM Eastern on October 22 and 8 AM Eastern on October 29, raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Canada has one of the world’s highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS), with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. Thus far, the entire relay has now raised over $10,000! You can find more information about this fall’s relay at gamersvsms.ca.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

A Guest of Honor was the first opera by famed ragtime composer Scott Joplin, likely written to celebrate the 1901 White House Dinner hosted by Teddy Roosevelt to honor Booker T. Washington. Unfortunately, due to the theft of the box office receipts during the national tour, Joplin was unable to meet payroll and the opera’s score was confiscated due to non-payment of payroll and bills. The score to the opera has since been considered lost. Joplin later wrote a second opera, 1911’s Treemonisha.

Today’s interviews:
Sadie thinks the finals feel even better than the Internet support she had after her first appearance.
Jack took a “flash card vacation” to prepare.
Rowan has friends who would have “rioted at dawn” had rowan not been picked for Second Chance.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Because tomorrow’s scores can be doubled in Final Jeopardy! tomorrow, Rowan’s effective lead is $12,600 over Sadie and $13,300 over Jack.
- The way the ruling on ANOTHER SHOT AT THE TITLE $400 took place was exactly how it’s played out in the past. Tape was stopped, precluding others from being able to rebound. This also happened often in the early seasons as the show—I personally heard a number of instances of this on the TuneIn Radio episodes I’ve been listening to recently.
- One thing I have definitely found over the years: for the entire history of the Alex Trebek version, there is a very vocal minority of fans who would be happiest if all three contestants were always a bunch of stiffs with no personality whatsoever. Seeing these vocal minorities react to rowan makes me think that this will never change.
- Today’s box score: October 27, 2022 Box Score.
